Bucharest Tours Romanian Athenaeum Ateneu A Tale of Bucharest by Autumn Tales

    Visit the Romanian Athenaeum

    A Tale of Bucharest, October 9, 2023June 24, 2024

Did you know that you don’t need to always wait for a concert to visit the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest?

Although the experience of a concert is incredible, sometimes it’s out of hand on a short stay. However, you can purchase a ticket for a self-guided visit for only 10 lei (~2 euro equivalent).

    About the Romanian Athenaeum

Before jumping to the tips and tricks, let’s find out about the story of the Athenaeum. Together with the Palace of Parliament, the Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Roman) is one of the most iconic landmarks of Bucharest. Built between 1886 and 1888 based on the plans of French architect Albert Galleron and partially funded through a public fundraiser, it was intended to be a home to Romanian art and sciences, hosting events from concerts to scientific debates. Today, it is the headquarters of the George Enescu Philharmonic and as well hosts the yearly George Enescu International Festival.

Also, let’s not forget about the magnificent fresco decorating the main concert hall by the Romanian painter Costin Petrescu which depicts 25 iconic scenes from the history of Romania and also hides its own interesting story.

    Back to the tips promised:

Tip 1: According to the website, the ticket office is on Constantin Esarcu street. However, in case you do not find the ticket office open, we recommend also checking the entrance on Benjamin Franklin street, on the right wing of the building.

Tip 2: Only cash is accepted and make sure to have the exact amount as change may not be always available.

The visit schedule is subject to the orchestra’s rehearsals. However, you can find the schedule on the Athenaeum’s website.
